Jesus Was Never Supposed To Be Your Side Thing.

I think one of the biggest dangers in modern Christianity is that you can build an entire life around Jesus… without actually staying close to Him.

You can build ministry.
Build influence.
Build a platform.
Build a brand.
Build content.
Build leadership.

And slowly, almost without realizing it, Jesus stops being the center and starts becoming the cover for everything else you actually care about.

Because somewhere along the way, many of us stopped following Jesus and started following purpose. And purpose without presence will burn you out every time.

I’ve seen it. Honestly, I’ve felt it. Moments where I’m so focused on building something for God that I forget to actually be with God. And the scary part is, people will still applaud you while it’s happening. Because you can be productive publicly while being disconnected privately. So I have a few thoughts on this.

  1. Ministry is a terrible replacement for intimacy

Ministry is beautiful. Leadership is meaningful. Influence can absolutely be used by God. But none of those things were ever meant to replace intimacy with Jesus. And yet, if we’re not careful, we slowly substitute being with Jesus for working for Jesus.

We prepare sermons but don’t pray.
Lead people but don’t slow down.
Build systems but ignore caring for our soul.

And eventually, we become spiritually efficient but emotionally empty.
We think because we’re doing things for God, we must automatically be healthy with God. But activity and intimacy are not the same thing.

I think a lot of Christians today are exhausted because they’re trying to sustain a calling without staying connected to the source. But you can’t give in public what you don’t receive in private.

Without Jesus, ministry becomes performance.
Leadership becomes pressure.
Influence becomes identity.
And eventually, your soul starts running on fumes.

2. You can gain influence and lose wonder

This is the part nobody talks about. It’s possible to become deeply familiar with Christian culture while becoming distant from the actual presence of God.

You know the language.
Know the podcasts.
Know the theology.
Know how to communicate.
Know how to lead rooms.
Know how to inspire people.

But somewhere along the way, you lost your awe of Jesus. And when awe disappears, Christianity becomes mechanical. We start treating Jesus like a strategy instead of a Savior.

And suddenly, the goal isn’t faithfulness anymore, it’s growth.
More reach.
More impact.
More visibility.
More opportunities.

But the Kingdom of God has never been built on self-importance. Jesus didn’t call us to become impressive Christians. He called us to remain faithful disciples.

I’ve had moments where I caught myself thinking more about building the thing than protecting my heart. More focused on what’s next than who’s at the center. And the wild thing about ambition is that it can feel holy while quietly pulling your attention away from Jesus.

Not all distractions looks rebellious. Sometimes it’s not sin that will derail you but your business.

3. If Jesus isn’t the center, eventually everything feels hollow

I think a lot of leaders and Christians are more tired than they admit. Not because they don’t love God.
But because they’ve been carrying things they were never meant to carry without staying rooted in the One who sustains them.

Because success without Jesus still feels empty.
Growth without Jesus still feels hollow.
Influence without Jesus still leaves you anxious.

Why? Because your soul was never designed to be fulfilled by assignment alone.

We think the goal is to build something big for God. But the real goal is to become close to Him.
The disciples changed the world not because they were impressive, but because they had been with Jesus. That was the defining thing about them.

Not branding.
Not strategy.
Not charisma.

Presence.

I think that’s what people are actually starving for right now.
Not more polished Christians.
Not more influencers.
Not more noise.

People are starving for people who actually know Jesus.

People whose peace feels real.
Whose humility feels real.
Whose love feels real.
Whose lives make Jesus believable again.

Final Thought… If you made it this far, we’re friends.

Ministry is beautiful.
Leadership is meaningful.
Influence can absolutely make an impact.
But none of it works without Jesus at the center. Because without Him, eventually all we’re left with is pressure dressed up as purpose.

So here’s the reminder: Don’t let the thing you build for Jesus become bigger than your life with Jesus.

Don’t lose awe chasing influence.
Don’t lose intimacy chasing impact.
Don’t lose your soul trying to build something successful in His name.

Because at the end of the day, Jesus was never supposed to be your side thing. He is the main thing.

And without Him, we truly have nothing.
